Over the past months, Woodworker’s Journal eZine has kept our readers apprised of developments in the current litigation proceedings between Robert Bosch Tool Corporation and SawStop, regarding Bosch’s skin-sensing REAXX™ Jobsite Table Saw.

To that end, on Dec. 1, 2016, SawStop issued the following press release:

“On Nov. 10, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) confirmed Administrative Law Judge Thomas B. Pender’s previous patent infringement findings against Robert Bosch Tool Corporation. The ITC will now consider Judge Pender’s recommended next steps including ‘a cease and desist order issue against Robert Bosch Tool Corp.,’ regarding importation of the infringing REAXX saw and activation cartridges into the United States.”

The release continues:

“Dr. Stephen Gass, SawStop’s president, commented on the ITC’s confirmation: ‘We are very pleased that the Commission confirmed Judge Pender’s findings that Bosch infringes our patents. We regret that Bosch chose to introduce the REAXX saw in disregard of our patents, leaving us with no alternative but to defend our rights in court. We have invested millions of dollars in research and development to protect woodworkers from serious injury, and we remain grateful for the U.S. patent system for protecting and encouraging our safety innovations.’”

Bosch did not issue its own press release in response to SawStop’s Dec. 1 announcement, but Linda Beckmeyer, Bosch’s manager of media and public relations, offered this email reply to Woodworker’s Journal:

“At this time, the ITC proceedings are still under way. Recently, Bosch was notified that the ITC decided not to review a final initial determination issued by the presiding Administrative Law Judge, which ruled in favor of Bosch on two patents and against Bosch on two patents. The ITC also set a schedule for further briefings on the matter. We expect that the final decision will not be made until 2017.

Bosch maintains that development of its professional table saw product respects other companies’ patents and represents a new and unique technology in the construction market.

The Bosch REAXX™ Jobsite Table Saw is based on patented innovations created by the Power Tool Institute with advanced development conducted by the engineering team at Robert Bosch Tool Corp. in Mount Prospect, Illinois. This research has resulted in more than a dozen U.S. patents. At Bosch, safety is a priority – and we will work to defend consumers’ rights to buy our products. We believe that advanced REAXX safety technology does not violate any competitor’s intellectual property rights.”

Woodworker’s Journal will continue to provide updates about this case to our eZine readers as information becomes available.

This tip will help you easily cut plexiglass with no chips or breaks. Plexiglass can be tricky to cut on a table saw. The thin plastic might start to vibrate or flutter. Plexiglass also tends to chip easily. Chris Marshall uses a crosscut sled and a scrap of plywood to secure the plexiglass and prevent chipping.

Rockler Radius Gauge Set https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/rockler-radius-gauge-set/ Tue, 03 Jan 2017 14:00:51 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=34997 Two aluminum gauges with convex and concave curves make it easy to measure spindle, dowel and router bit sizes.

There are plenty of common tools in the shop to check straight measurements, but far fewer for assessing the size of smaller curves. Rockler’s new Radius Gauge Set can help you verify different curvatures of spindle turnings or the diameters of dowels or router bit cutters by simply holding the gauge against the curve.

Each cast-aluminum gauge includes a concave and convex reference for assessing eight sizes of curves. One gauge measures in 16ths (from 1/16 in. to 15/16 in.) and the other measures in eighths, from 1/8 in. up to 1 in.

Unlike shuffling through some other gauge sets made of thin metal, all the sizes on this pair are accessible at once around the rim, and each is clearly marked with an easy-to-read engraving, along with indicator arrows that point to the appropriate reference. There’s also an indicator ring in the middle that rotates to point to the size you are using, which should help prevent errors.

Rockler’s Radius Gauge Set (item 52930) is available now and sells for $29.99.

How Do I Protect Cast Iron from Rusting During Storage? https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/protect-cast-iron-rusting-storage/ Tue, 03 Jan 2017 14:00:27 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=34951 My woodworking machines will be stored in a non-climate controlled facility for several months. How do I prevent the cast iron from rusting?

]]>
In the near future, I’ll be moving to a new house, but the timing is not going to allow me to set up my shop immediately. I will probably have to store most, if not all, of my equipment for several months in non-climate-controlled conditions. My question: How to prepare the cast-iron tables of saws and jointers, etc., to prevent against rust?  – Ernie Mascarello

Rob Johnstone: While there may be better ways to take care of the cast iron, when I recently moved my machines to a storage facility, I first slathered on a super thick layer of paste wax and just left it there. It “hardened” after a fashion…and I am sure it is hard as a rock right now in the super cold temperatures of my unheated storage unit. (And let me be clear, the location of that unit will remain top-secret!) A couple of days before I put the paste wax on the tools, I wiped the tops and exposed metal surfaces with paraffin oil. I will be able to tell you how well the iron survived in a few weeks.

Tim Inman: Cosmoline, which is a thick and waxy grease often employed by machine manufacturers before crating and shipping, would be the totally bulletproof material to prevent rust. It is also awfully messy. Actually, I think you would get along just fine by applying a nice heavy coat of beeswax to the cast-iron surfaces. Don’t polish it; just apply and forget it until it is time to set up in your new shop. If it is too thick and/or too hard, a cloth soaked in mineral spirits will always release it. You can make up your own beeswax paste by simply putting cakes of beeswax into a can of mineral spirits. It will dissolve wonderfully, and you have a great surfacer to use.

Chris Marshall: Warm and cold temperature swings aren’t really a big deal for stored machinery, provided the relative humidity remains low. “Hot and dry” or “cold and dry” will keep rust at bay. But throw moisture into the equation, and that’s where the problems begin. Aside from a wax-based metal coating that Rob and Tim are suggesting, you also could use a dry lubricating spray like GlideCote™ by Bostik. Just spray it on and let it dry to seal the metal. It’s probably the quickest and cleanest of these solutions, and in my experience of moving and storing machines, it has worked well.

Good luck on your home and shop move!

Many woodworkers lend their talents to working with exotic woods at one time or another. But few have mixed exotic woods with a steampunk design. I pulled together African and South American woods along with parts from antique apple peelers to build locking boxes with a steampunk flair.
